Hardtack: The Original MRE

Have you ever wondered how to make hardtack? Maybe a better question is, have you ever wondered what hardtack is? Yeah, me too. It turns out the answer to both questions is pretty straightforward. Hardtack is a simple, easy to make, long-lasting food that has been around since the Egyptians were building pyramids. Due to it’s durability and portative nature, for centuries hardtack has been carried by everyone from ancient sailors to Civil War soldiers. Here’s how to make your own hardtack:

  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 teaspoons salt


  • Mix ingredients
  • Roll into ½” rectangular sheet
  • Cut into 3”x3” sections
  • Poke holes through dough
  • Place on ungreased cookie sheet
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes or until lightly brown
  • Flip hardtack over and bake additional 30 minutes
